After meeting me for an exploratory conversation, she saw that I had a profile marked by an Ivy League education, varied published writing, and a few years of work experience where I had demonstrated the ability to reinvent myself and do well at something new (writing case studies and managing the case centre). One of my employers was an exception though. That made me think: Doesn’t everyone start somewhere? And although I recognize the importance of experience and knowing the jargons, there is some merit in fresh ideas and perspectives! Nevertheless, the response I received from the gate-keepers of PR and Corporate Communications was unanimous: You do not have n years of experience in CorpCom or agency. I was looking to help corporates and their leaders tell their stories such that they generate a powerful impact. A journalist by training, I had been unearthing the human side in every story anyways which I was hoping to bring into otherwise dry and non-sticky business communications. Having written feature stories for Forbes, Conde Nast Traveller, Caravan, Economic Times, Mint etc storytelling for corporates was not even a drastic change that I was exploring. This video reminded me of my struggle to enter the world of storytelling for businesses and CXOs a year ago when I was made to feel like a square peg in a round hole.
